A neonicotinoid insecticide, imidacloprid is used not only for insect control, but also for the control of some fungal diseases. It is registered for use in more than 100 countries on more than 140 crops. Some resistance in the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) has been observed in East Asia and Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

For noncrop use, imidacloprid is popular for nursery landscape and forestry applications, as well as for veterinary applications and as a flea treatment for household pets.

In recent years, imidacloprid has been imputed as a possible culprit in Colony Collapse Disorder in honeybees, although no direct link has been proven.
