Tanzania President Dr. Jakaya M. Kikwete and his administration have prioritized agriculture and embraced private industry’s ability to innovate by encouraging larger farm sizes, mechanization, irrigation and expanding access to modern input technologies.

“The use of irrigation, high yielding seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and ultimately food production will remain low unless we encourage larger farm sizes,” he told an audience of more than 300 agriculture leaders at the AGRI Business East Africa conference and exhibition in Dar es Salaam Jan. 28. “Embracing innovation is crucial for increasing production, which will translate into more incomes, food security, foreign exchange and raw materials for agriculture industries, the value chain and farmers.”

The transformation of the country’s agriculture industry, centralized by the administration’s Kilimo Kwanza campaign (agriculture first), is pivotal to its goal to transform Tanzania into a “middle economy” by 2025.
