Ukraine Adds To Sugar Beet Area

Ukraine’s farmers are devoting more land to sugar beet production at the expense of reduced plantings of winter wheat. According to official Ukrainian statistics, the profitability of sugar beet production to farmers increased in 2005, while the rate of return for grains and sunflower seed decreased.

While sugar beet yields in Ukraine are still largely determined by the weather, though sugar beet yields have been increasing in Ukraine since 1999, driven by the increased use of improved genetics, crop protection chemicals, and equipment by former collective farms, reports the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS).
