Seeking a Solution

Chengdu Newsun’s investment in research and development accounts for more than 15% of its annual revenue. The company’s commitment to innovation includes a new R&D center in Chengdu, completed in 2026, representing a $20 million investment. The center features AI-assisted molecular design, microbial engineering and synthetic biology, high-value natural product discovery, as well as toxicological evaluation.

“It is positioned as a fundamental research and innovation center, supporting the discovery and development of new biological technologies,” Li says. “These capabilities allow us to connect early-stage research with product development and provide stronger technical support for future innovation.”

Not only does this center provide researchers with the tools necessary to complete their jobs, but it also allows employees to feel secure about the company’s future, Li says.

“Our researchers and sales team feel confident about the future of Chengdu Newsun. We provide both management and technical career paths, technology-commercialization incentives, and long-term incentives for key talent,” Li says. “They want to stay because they think only innovation can bring the future.”

In total, Chengdu Newsun has two dedicated R&D centers and a kiwi farm thanks to the Sichuan Basin’s optimal sunshine, well-drained soil, and temperatures for commercial kiwi production. The second R&D center focuses on applied research and field validation, containing testing infrastructure and a greenhouse.

“Infrastructure and technical support can be limiting, and some growers focus on short-term returns and may not fully recognize the benefits of sustainability,” Li says. “That’s why demonstrations and hands-on guidance are key to adoption.”

Creating a Plan

When creating an R&D plan, the company starts by collecting market hotspots and key production constraints from growers, distributors, and real agricultural field conditions and analyzing underlying causes of problems before defining the technical approach, says Dr. Jin Huang, Vice Dean of the Biotechnology Research Institute at Chengdu Newsun.

Next, it classifies the proposed product or program as either a biocontrol product or a bioestimulante and incorporates regulatory and sales data needs into the research design at an early stage.

“From the regulatory side, we consider safety, marker compounds, clarity of the mode of action, and consistency of efficacy,” says Huang. “From the sales side, we define what field efficacy data, crop safety data, and differentiation evidence are needed for market access.”

Finally, the company evaluates industrialization feasibility.
