Southeast US Fruit Crops Suffer Cold Damage

Frost and temperatures in the 20s over the weekend damaged a wide variety of crops across the Southeast US, such as peach, plum, apple, blueberry, strawberry and wine grape crops, according to information gathered by the Associated Press. The ruined crops stretch from West Virginia through North and South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama –- where damage in one county ranged from 30% to 80% — to Texas. Farmers will not know the cost extent of the damage until the middle or end of this week. If crop damage is severe enough, Georgia’s agriculture commissioner may ask for federal aid.
